Amsterdam

Ms Nikita Lalwani announced as the first Indian Bicycle Mayor of the city Baroda (Vadodara).

In the city of Baroda (Vadodara) Ms Nikita Lalwani is appointed as the first Bicycle Mayor of Baroda and thereby the first in India and Asia. Ms Nikita Lalwani is supported by the Mayor of Barado City, Mr Bharat Dhangar and by other local authorities in the field of cycling and urban mobility. With becoming the Bicycle Mayor of Baroda, Nikita joins the international Bicycle Mayor and Leader Network.

Nikita started cycling 3 years ago when her daily route to work began taking too much time by car or scooter. She tried cycling and immediately was convinced. It is now her vision to make cycling acceptable on the roads, not just for leisure and sports, but also for commuting. Air pollution is one of India’s biggest problems in cities and cycling is one of the easiest sustainable mobility solutions. Believing that cycling will make the city safer and cleaner she has the vision to make cities in India cycling-friendly with at least 1/3 of the population preferring cycling as a commute option and also as a part of the lifestyle.

Having Baroda as the first city with a Bicycle Mayor will inspire other metropoles like Delhi and Mumbai to do the same to make the shift from car-centric to human-centric cities.

Nikita will join the Bicycle Mayor and Leader Summit held in Amsterdam on the 10th and 11th of June. Afterwards, she will also visit the international cycling congress Velo-City in Arnhem and Nijmegen, where cycling experts and civil servants will meet from all around the world.
